My husband was diagnosed in Jan 22 with Gleason of 3+4 and psa 6. His consultant at Wolverhampton hospital said he is a candidate for active surveillance and passed us over to our local hospital in Worcester. At his first follow up appointment with the consultant he said that he should have surgery to avoid ‘ missing the window of opportunity’ He has just received the results of a psa test which is now 5.6. Has anyone else experienced 2 different hospitals giving opposite treatment options

  1. Hi. How old is your husband? I had to make the same decision 7 years ago. Opted for the surgery with excellent results.

    1. Hi . A Gleason score of 3+4 is on the cusp between active surveillance and time for treatment. So, it may not be surprising to get two different recommendations. A number of other factors such as risk level, the number of positive cores, the location of the cancer ... can determine the suggested course. Did you have any other tests, such as the Decipher to determine risk level or an MRI? I know you are in the U.K., so the treatment protocols may be different. Did the doctor who recommended surgery discuss other options or tell you why it is the best option? Please feel free to keep us posted or ask additional questions. Best, Richard (ProstateCancer.net Team)

      1. I don't think it's unusual for two different medical professionals or hospitals to offer different opinions. We were in the same situation so decided to opt for getting a third opinion as to the best way to treat the cancer. Some insurance companies won't reimburse for a third opinion but in our situation, we were wiling to pay the extra cost for the additional information we received and for our peace of mind. Best wishes to you as you navigate this to find the best care for your husband.

        1. IMO If your goal is cure, waiting gives some advantage to cancer.
